An Impossible Question

You sometimes ask me

why I love you,

an impossible question.

Ask me why the sky is blue

or why the seasons change…

I mastered those years ago.

Ask me how to fix a computer

or why the window won’t stay open,

those are easy.

For our Crystal Wedding Anniversary

I decided I would try to answer

your impossible question.

I love you because of our differences and because of our similarities.

Because of the way you think, the way we laugh at the same things,

the way we think of the same jokes.

Because of the way we fit, the way we complement each other.

Where I am weak, you reinforce me.

Because of your kindness, your caring for others before yourself,

the way you are drawn to the neediest first.

Because I know our daughters will grow to be like you someday

and the fact that you will argue that that is not necessarily a good thing.

I love you because of your hidden strength

which has seen me through some difficult times,

although you will deny it’s existence.

There is not enough paper, nor enough time

because this list can never be finished.

There are hundreds and thousands of reasons

with new reasons to add,

appearing randomly, when I least expect them.

Although I will never be able to list all the reasons why,

I do know

I Love You
